New Green Card eases entry to Denmark
09-11-2006
Human resources and know how:
Exceptionally qualified foreigners now have a better chance of being accepted into the Danish labour market.
Foreigners’ admittance to the Danish labour market will in the future be in accordance with a points system. The government, with the backing of the Danish People’s Party, has agreed on how the new Green Card system is to operate. Under a points system, foreigners wishing to work in Denmark will be awarded points according to their level of education, language skills and business experience.
Points will also be awarded according to age and current income. The younger the foreigner is and the more money the foreigner has earned, the more points he or she will be awarded – and the better chance the person will have to be admitted into the country.
Only a limited number of highly qualified foreigners are admitted these days. Through the so-called job card system, last year approximately 1000 foreigners were granted permission to live and work in Denmark. Among them were engineers, doctors and IT specialists. Twice as many highly educated Danes leave Denmark each year.
