British book store giant to enter into Denmark
08-05-2008
Regional setup:
The book store chain WHSmith is to sell non-expensive books in new stores at Copenhagen Airports.
As from the autumn of 2008 passengers at Copenhagen Airports will have a new selection of reading matter for their travels. The British chain WHSmith which has a strong position on the British market is to operate five new stores in the airport in cooperation with the present operator SSP.
“With WHSmith's entry we welcome an international operator which is not yet present on the Danish market today,” says Vice President for Commercial Business Henrik Busch from Copenhagen Airports A/S. “WHSmith’s brand may contribute to an expanded global understanding for the international travellers with its over 215 years of experience within retail,” he says.
The book stores at Copenhagen Airports are part of WHSmith’s new strategy. The company is known for its stores at traffic junctions but after a low year for the high street stores WHSmith is now reverting to its core business; confectionary, books and beverages. Here sales increased by 1.8 per cent to £ 734 million last year in a market in which sales were decreasing compared with 2006, writes Børsen Business Daily.
