Experts recommend harbour tunnel and more by-pass roads in Copenhagen
17-01-2008
Location and infrastructure:
The Danish government's infrastructure commission suggests massive investments in new infrastructure in Denmark - private financing is an obvious possibility.
A harbour tunnel in Copenhagen and better by-pass roads around Copenhagen, as well as a new high-class road across the Capital Region from Køge to Helsingør together with a much improved collective traffic system, is aimed at improving traffic flow in the Danish Capital Region.
These are the conclusions in the Infrastructure Commission's recently published report "Denmark's Transport Infrastructure 2030", writes ErhvervsBladet.
It will cost a large amount of money if all the Infrastructure Commission's recommendations are to be carried out within a reasonable time. Therefore a possible public-private investment solution (OPP) is being mooted and several private investment companies have declared that they would like to assist with financing. In general, the commission considers that the projects with the largest socio-economic yield should be carried out first.
General manager Erik Østergaard from Danish Transport and Logistics, who is a member of the Infrastructure Commission, has already pointed at the possibility of turning Denmark into an important hub for the northern European conveyancing of goods; however, it will require better a significantly improved infrastructure. Unlike passenger traffic, the conveyancing of goods is often incorporated into production and logistics solutions.
Another important aspect is increased use of Intelligent Transport Systems - and everything needs to take overall consideration of the environment with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions. However, traffic flow in Copenhagen continues to be better than in most other capitals in Europe.
