The first 40,000 square metres of US Biogen Idec’s construction in Hillerød have been finalised and now the company’s Danish architects Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter are in the process of projecting the mega construction’s second phase.

The US pharmaceutical group Biogen Idec headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has started the second stage of its large-scale construction in Hillerød north of Copenhagen.

Here Biogen Idec bought an industrial site of 247,000 square metres in 2001 with the intention of building the group’s first large international production plant. The Americans selected Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter for the task and the construction was started in July 2004. The first buildings were occupied in the spring of 2006, writes Børsen Business Daily.

The company in Hillerød has licensed packing and quality control laboratory and delivers products for patients in more than 90 countries. Biogen Idec’s production plant is to be finalised in 2009 and will have a capacity of 90,000 litre for the manufacturing of biological medicine. The number of staff in Hillerød is 200 and this number is expected to grow to approximately 400 in 2009.

Presently, the projecting of the next stage is in progress. This stage will include the production building Large-Scale Manufacturing (LSM). It will be 20,000 square metres inclusive of all supply and production installations.
